WHITE ELEPHANT Gift Exchange

12/31/2023 2:00 pm - 7:30 pm

It’s time for a White Elephant gift exchange, Covenant of the River style! Gathering starts at 2:00PM and is open to all.  We will be doing things a little different this year that’s why we are starting early.

The gift exchange will be at the start.  So please arrive around 2:00 and we will do all the pre-exchange stuff with the gifts and start the fun around 2:30.

When the  gifts have found their new homes and paper and fun stuff put away,  we will begin having our potluck dinner, around 5pm.   Please bring some food to share if you can.

Gift Exchange Info
As you are able, please bring an item worth around 15 dollars wrapped in holiday cheer. You can buy or make a gift. You can re-gift something you just received or pick something up from the thrift store. It is a Pagan gift exchange- so you could also consider sharing a tool or book that could use a new home. The gift can be useful like incense, seasonally appropriate like cocoa cups or silly like a tabletop bowling game. It is completely appropriate to take something off your bookshelf, dust it off and wrap it.

If, for whatever reason, you are not able to bring a gift send an email to council@covenantoftheriver.org and we will be happy to support you so that you can attend and participate. The gathering is meant to be a fun celebration of the new calendar year, cost does not need to be prohibitive.

The gist of our version of white elephant…

  • Everybody gets a number, the person with 1 picks a gift and unwraps it
  • The person with 2 can either ‘steal’ the already open gift or open a new gift
  • The person with 3 can ‘steal’ either already opened gift or open a new gift
  • And so it goes, around the circle until everyone has chosen a gift
  • Then the person with 1 can choose to keep the gift they have OR
  • They can choose to ‘steal’ any of the gifts.
  • Gifts can be stolen 2 times so the third owner gets to keep it
  • Even the person with 1 can’t steal a gift that is in the third owner’s possession.
  • Please expect cajoling and heckling.

Remember to park on Swallow Road, not in the cul-de-sac out of respect for our neighbors. If it is your first time visiting us, please read the code of conduct before you come and when you arrive find the yellow door around on the garage side of the house to join us in the River Hall.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Council.
